Stallone versus Schwarzenegger
As a massive 80s action hero fan I have always wondered who, between these giants do you think is the greater action hero actor? Who did the greater movies? The best performances?

As much as I admire Arnie, I think, through his Rocky and Rambo roles, Sly edges it:

Stallone has made some good films, the first two rockys, first blood, nighthawks, even liked him in escape to victory. tango and cash, lock up, cobra and demolition man were all decent action type films for their time, if quite cheesey. stallone is the better actor and is a decent scripwriter too, but arnie probably has to win it for the out and out best action star: conan, terminator, commando, red heat, raw deal, total recall, predator, last action hero, true lies.

Arnie wins it hands down, for me.

Predator
Total recall
Terminator

All better than Rocky and First Blood, which are the best Stallone films. Never really a fan of the Rocky films tbh, or the majority of sports based films. It's almost impossible to recreate the reality of a proper sport. Although saying that Haye/ Bellew was Rocky-esque, but not in a good way.

Stallone as hard as bag of marshmallows and a short ass.
The Rocky movie are terrible.

Arnie is the man..Predator and T2 on it's own are enough.

Actually, Predator is amazing. Bit of a toss up between that and Terminator. T2 is bloody good too.

Arnie took action films to a new level and had the much, much better films than Stallone. But the Rambo and Rocky films push Stallone close. Stallone is the better actor for me. In later years Stallone has had a bit of a second (or third wind) whilst Arnie has dwindled.

Both hero's of mine from my childhood. Best films for me from either of them are Terminator and Rambo: First Blood. Films that can be watched over and over and not get boring.

Re: Stallone versus Schwarzenegger
All the people saying Arnie was a shit actor... wasn't that kind of part of his shtick? Most of his films aren't meant to be taken seriously.

I mean I love them all but if I found myself analysing the mis-en-scen and judging the acting of a film like Commando or Total Recall I'd probably kill myself.

"even if Stallone did insist on changing the ending prompting Kirk Douglas to withdraw from the movie"

That's not exactly what happened. The book ended with Rambo being killed but in pre-production there were something like 20 scripts written and the ending was continually changed. There were about half a dozen or more actors considered for the part, Stallone accepted it at virtually the last minute after Brad Davis was tinned when the project was sold onto another studio and he had zero input on the script.

Arnie for me. He'd win for Predator alone. Then there's Conan, the first two Terminator films etc. Plus, my then girlfriend's cousin was in Kindergarten Cop.

He he. Yeah, but what I said was right, as long as you qualify it with a generous helping of relativity.

Re: Stallone versus Schwarzenegger
Arnie could never do a film like Cop land. Stallone showed he could act in that

First Blood was brilliant even if Stallone did insist on changing the ending prompting Kirk Douglas to withdraw from the movie and Rocky is an all time classic and Oscar winner. Its a no contest.

That said, I loved Predator, Terminator and Conan. Brilliant films.

Tango and Cash is one of my favourite Sly movies.

Which leads me to reminisce about the 'Classic Russell' thread of a few years ago.
